#YEG Made The 'World's Best Cities' List
For those of you who missed the memo in November, for the first time Edmonton earned a spot on the World’s Best Cities list. Out of the 100 cities selected, we’re so proud of YEG for scoring 60th. Here are some reasons we think we deserved the spot:
10) Location, Location, Location
Edmonton is within driving distance from the mountains, the prairies, the oilsands, gorgeous beautiful lakes, and the American border. That means there’s plenty of opportunities for weekend road trips!

9) Urban Renewal
2016 was the year Edmontonians created a country-wide discussion about revitalizing the core of our city, which led to the renewal and creation of some of our favourite places – like Rogers Place!

8) Booming Culinary Scene
Edmonton is becoming internationally known in the culinary world, with plenty of our restaurants and food shops earning major street credit. Buzzfeed even dubbed 124th Street's Duchess Bakeshop as “the best bakery in Canada!”

7) Summer Festivals
Summer in Edmonton is marked by an endless array of festivals to keep residents entertained in the hot weather. Some of our favourites are the Fringe Festival, Folk Festival, K-Days, the Shakespeare Festival, and the Bacon Festival!

6) Winter Activities
We’re getting a hot reputation for being a booming winter city, too. This January alone is marked by plenty of festivals and celebratory winter events, like the Whiskey Festival (Jan 17,) World Snow Day (Jan 21) and Ice on Whyte (Jan 25!)

5) Shopping Aplenty
There’s no shortage on shopping here! Whether it be West Edmonton Mall, Whyte Avenue, 124th street or Jasper Avenue, there’s definitely plenty of places to spend your hard earned money.

4) Cultivation of the Arts
In addition to having an award winning Art Gallery, Edmonton is also a community full of creatives. There’s even an instagram group tag, #yeggers, devoted to documenting Edmonton photographers and artists!

3) Prioritizing Education
It’s no secret that the University of Alberta located in our city is one of the best Canadian universities to attend. They rank 2nd in the world when it comes to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

2) Acceptance for All
Edmonton is known for its acceptance of all but this is especially noticed during pride week when the sidewalks in Old Strathcona are decorated with celebratory rainbows!

1) Bounds of green space
Edmontonians love their green space – and with 7,300 hectares of River Valley (equivalent to 18 Stanley Parks) they’re getting it! The River Valley is the largest expanse of urban green space in Canada and is composed of numerous parks and walking trails.
